"The Christian Magistrate: a Discourse, with an Appendix" by Thomas Houston, a Covenanter, is a defense of theonomy written in 1832. It covers such things as the supremacy of Christ and the sufficiency of Scripture in political matters, ruler qualifications, the duties of civil magistrates, and the historical Reformed perspective on civil government.

An excerpt:

The moral law defines and declares the crime, but says nothing of the punishment. The Judicial law is the fence that God himself set round the precepts of the Decalogue, which are of universal obligation. It is the penal code of heaven – the rule by which alone, as far as human society is concerned we can measure the magnitude of the crime committed, [p. 90] and the proper award of punishment which it merits. Consider it entirely abrogated, and then, as far as relates to the Civil Magistrate, the sanction of the Decalogue is removed. He has a sword still, but he is without directions how he may use it.

Like a mariner without a compass, he is afloat on a sea of uncertainties, ready at every moment to be swallowed up by the tempestuous billows, or to be dashed to pieces on the rocks and quicksands that threaten his destruction. But the Christian Magistrate is not appointed God’s minister, and left thus without directions in performing the functions of his arduous office. His duty is clearly and minutely declared in the words of Him who is without variableness and shadow of turning, and whose law, like himself, is unchangeable. With this divine instrument in his hand, he has nothing to fear. Let him apply it faithfully, and leave the consequences with God. Then will his administration be crowned with success, and God’s glory and man’s good will be extensively promoted. (pp. 90, 91)

Brian Schwertley has just released a thorough critique of Matthew Winzer on theonomy and the Westminster Confession of Faith. This critique is very helpful for understanding theonomy and the theonomic views of the Westminster Assembly.

The following is an excerpt from the first paragraph:

In 2009 the journal, The Confessional Presbyterian, published a lengthy article entitled “The Westminster Assembly and the Judicial Law: A Chronological Compilation and Analysis.” Part one by Chris Coldwell is a chronologically ordered collection of source material from divines written or preached during the time the Confession of Faith was formulated. Part one is thorough and exceptionally useful for understanding what churchmen and scholars were thinking about the judicial law as it related to Christian states in the New Covenant era. Part two by Matthew Winzer sets forth Winzer’s analysis of the original source material and also serves as a springboard to critique the theonomy movement. In this brief study, we will examine sections of Winzer’s article in order to note some of his misrepresentations of theonomy and his errors regarding the Confession and the judicial law. Before we do so, however, we need to note some things about theonomy and the theonomy movement in order to clarify matters and make our own position clear.

The Victory of Christian Culture: An Exposition of Isaiah 65:17-25 by Daniel F. N. Ritchie is available as a free download. On this short book, Ritchie writes:

This work was originally an exposition that I had to write for my D.Min course at The North American Reformed Seminary. By publishing it in this format, I hope to bring the contents to a wider audience. The position which it advocates is what is known as “postmillennialism.”

 

This is not a good term, as it implies that an optimistic view of the future stands or falls on a particular interpretation of Revelation 20. Yet this is not what postmillennialism is really about, it is primarily concerned with defending the idea that Christ’s kingdom will be victorious in history.

 

While a minority view in the modern Reformed world, it was once the standard Reformed position (as opposed to the pessimism of Lutheranism). Obviously one does not have the space here to answer every objection against, or even make every argument for postmillennialism, nevertheless, this might be a good place for those wishing to look into the issue to begin their studies. Hopefully, it will cause some modern Calvinists to return to the eschatological and cultural transformational views of their Reformed forebears.

War is the settling of controversy between nations. War establishes righteousness or evil. However, it is important to understand that war is not essentially evil or a necessary evil. The Bible says in Exodus 15:3, "The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name." To say that war is evil in its essence is to say that God is evil even though God does work all things for good (Romans 8:28).

This book is a defense of biblical civil law, on topics despised not only by humanists, but by professing Christians. It is, in short, theonomic apologetics. God is Just takes our culture and its attacks on the Bible to task. It defends biblical theocracy, justice, and slavery, and cuts humanistic opposition down to size by its own self-destructive foolishness, and, most importantly, by the sword of God’s word.

In addition, the book includes appendices defending theonomy biblically and historically, as well as appendices refuting alternative political philosophies.

About the Second Edition

We did not originally intend to release a second edition so soon. However, after deciding to change printing companies, we thought we'd go ahead and make a few updates in the process. 

Besides some minor editorial changes, the main difference between the first and second edition is that the second edition has a textbook-style cover (as opposed to the first edition's removable cover), a Scripture index, and an appendix that addresses section 19.4 of the Westminster Confession of Faith. (Those who have the first edition can download the appendix here.)

Also, in Appendix B, there are improvements to the refutation of the argument that says that since Christ's kingdom is not of this world, Christianity has nothing to do with civil government. 

(Note: the second edition has a significant page increase from the first edition [it is now around 650 pages],pages do not coincide with the content of the first edition's pages.)
