A Review of the Hunger Games (Kevin Swanson)

I tend to agree with most of what Kevin Swanson says, although I disagreed with much of what he said in this review.

First of all, yes, it was wrong for Katniss to kill her opponents with the tracker-jackers. But if you had read the book, you would know that the author actually criticizes Katniss for her violence but praises Peeta for never killing anyone and for trying to sacrifice himself for others.

(Also, the main reason the author even had the Tracker-Jackers in there in the first place is b/c they feature so prominently in the third book, and she wanted to make the series more cohesive).

Second of all, the main message of The Hunger Games is anti-Statism. The central government (called "The Capitol") demands that everyone all but worship "war heroes" or "Hunger Games Winners" just like the ancient Pagans did. The statists wipe out a thirteenth of their country's population. They seize control of land at will (just like Ahab seized Naboth's vineyard), ect.

I think that the message of the Hunger Games is perfectly consistent with the message that arbitrary laws will always lead to totalitarianism and moral depravity.
